Craft Ale & Conversation with Michael & Mark Martinez

Please join us for a conversation with artist Michael Martinez and curator Mark Anthony Martinez on Monday, December 11 from 7pm - 8:30pm at Flax Studio. Craft Ale provided!

WTFIMM is a text-based solo-exhibition featuring new works by San Antonio based artist, Michael Martinez. The eponymous exhibit dissects gender expectations through the artist’s own given name. The body of work represents a larger exploration regarding Martinez’ practice and will be on view for the first time at Flax Studios. WTFIMM is curated by local artist and artist’s brother, Mark Anthony Martinez.

About the artist:
Michael Martinez is a conceptual artist whose work confronts identity, from the vantage of a Gay person of color. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Martinez earned their Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Intermedia, from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, in 2013. Working within performance, installation, and new media, Martinez employs an interdisciplinary approach to deconstructing false dichotomies, surrounding desire and the expression of gender. Martinez has exhibited in Portland, Oregon; Austin, Texas; San Antonio, Texas and abroad, as part of the April meetings New Media Festival, in Belgrade, Serbia. Additionally, Martinez’ artwork has been featured in publications such as HuffPost, Mitú, Glasstire, and Out In SA. Currently, Michael Martinez lives and works in San Antonio, Texas.

About the curator:
Mark Anthony Martinez was born in San Antonio, Texas; Mark Anthony Martinez is a conceptual artist whose works investigate racialized identity via an “off-white” lens. His practice consists of installation, painting, text and video based works. He received his BFA in Intermedia at the Pacific Northwest College of Art (2011) and MFA in Contemporary Art Practice from Portland State University (2014). Most recently, Martinez served as Visual Arts Director to the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (2015-2017), facilitating over 20 exhibitions. He currently resides in San Antonio, Texas where he maintains his artistic and curatorial pursuits.
