Artist Talk with A. E. Mabry

  • Flax Studio 1420 South Alamo Street San Antonio, TX, 78204 United States (map)

Join us on Sunday, April 29th at 11am for coffee and conversation with artist A. E. Mabry. We will discuss her solo show at Flax Studio "Childhood Memories?" and learn about her creative process and meaning behind her work.

Childhood Memories? is a solo show by A E Mabry, co-curated by Gary Sweeney & Katy Silva. Texas based artist A E Mabry’s multimedia collages draw from her childhood memories and fascination with horror lms, creating eerie, innocent and nostalgic scenes with a smack of humor. Born in Dallas, Texas, Mabry grew up attending a very small Christian Baptist school. In contrast, Mabry’s home life was full of slap-stick horror movie lovers. It was bible studies all day, and blood and guts all evening. This juxtaposition of in uences has been a constant Mabry’s entire life and in her artwork. In Childhood Memories? Mabry draws on themes of death and comedy intertwined with nostalgia and innocence.

Her process, of repurposing found and thrift materials, plays a central role in shaping the narratives in her artwork. A single discovered object can become the crucial piece in a work, and the rest builds around it.
